Paul Mroczka asked:

The Arena Football League (AFL) is in full swing, attracting fans with fast, hard-hitting action, a lot of scoring, and dazzling plays made in tight quarters. The AFL, which has just entered its twentieth season, features 19 teams in two conferences – the National and American. Each conference is divided into two divisions, with the Eastern and Southern divisions in the National Conference and the Central and Western in the American.

If you’ve ever watched an AFL game, you certainly recognize it as being similar to the NFL version. Scoring is basically the same, although there are variations, and rules are also similar but, again, with some wrinkles that give the indoor version of American style football an added edge. The sport is a whole lot of professional football with some racket ball, basketball, and shrinkage thrown in. It’s the Mini-Me of NFL football.

The Teams

The National Conference contains ten teams with the Dallas Desperados, New York Dragons, Philadelphia Soul, and Columbus Destroyers in the Eastern Division and the Orlando Predators, Austin Wranglers, Georgia Force, Tampa Bay Storm, and Kansas City Brigade in the Southern Division. Last season the Dragons and Force were tops in their divisions.

In the Central Division of the American Conference the four teams are the Colorado Crush, Chicago Rush, Nashville Kats, and Grand Rapids Rampage. The Western Division includes the Los Angeles Avengers, San Jose Sabercats, Las Vegas Gladiators, Arizona Rattlers, and Utah Blaze. There are a total of nine teams in the American Conference of which the Crush and Avengers were the best in their respective geographical divisions.

The Field

The dimensions of the AFL field are what help make this a unique brand of football. The indoor surface, which is padded, is 50 yards long and 85 feet wide. The goal posts, like the field, are also smaller than those in the NFL – nine feet high with a crossbar height of 15 feet as opposed to those in the NFL, which are 18 ½ feet wide with the crossbar at 10 feet.

There are 48 inch high sideline barriers made of high density rubber, which help to ease the impact of receivers, running backs, and defensive players smacking into the stands as they go out of bounds.

Each end zone, which is eight feet deep, has a rebound net that is 30 feet wide and 32 feet high. The rebound net keeps the ball alive after a missed pass. If a ball is caught off the net, it is live and in play until it touches the playing surface. This feature, which allows play to continue, provides additional action. The nets and the short field help to increase scoring opportunities and are partly responsible for the typically high scores. It’s not unusual in an arena game for teams to put up a combined total of over 100 points! In fact the field, along with the rulebook, is geared towards creating a plethora of scoring opportunities, giving the AFL game an ongoing give-and-take unpredictability you often don’t find in the NFL.

The Rules

The petite field demands fewer players; you’ll find 8 rather than the standard NFL 11 on either side of the ball. There are also fewer specialists in the arena game – quarterback, one offensive specialist, a kicker and two defensive specialists. The offensive line must have four players and the defensive line three.

A few ways in which the rules are focused on keeping play continuous and action ongoing include the offensive/defensive rosters, the substitution rule and the play clock. Players, except for the specialists, play both offense and defense, which means there is less change over when the ball is turned over. Additionally, all non-specialists may substitute only once during a quarter. Finally, unlike the very long 45 second clock found in the NFL, the arena league has a more basketball-like 25 second clock, which over the course of a 60 minute game just about doubles the number of plays run.

There are four 15 minute quarters; however, unlike the NFL, the clock does not stop for out of bounds plays or incomplete passes unless the game is in the last minute of play in the half or the referee stops it for a penalty or injury. Once again, play occurs at a very quick rate, making the game action-packed. Each team gets three timeouts per half.

One thing that’s missing from the AFL that you’ll find in the NFL is the punt. That means, with the shortened playing field and the no punt rule, every play off the offensive line has the potential to put points on the board. The offense has four downs to move the ball 10 yards for a first down or to score.

Scoring is also a bit different from the other league with a drop kick after a TD being given 2 points and a drop kick field goal being awarded 4 points. All other scoring is the same.

Passing follows NCAA rules, which state that a receiver must have one foot inbounds when catching a pass. The nets are the other variation from the NFL game. The receiving team may also use the nets during a kickoff or a missed field goal to field balls. Thus, as long as the kick doesn’t stray off into the sideline area, there is always the chance for a runback, since the ball cannot be kicked beyond the end zone.

Overtime rules also vary a bit from those in the National Football League. NFL football plays one sudden death overtime period during the regular season. AFL overtime runs the same number of minutes, but it is not a sudden death situation. Each team gets one possession in the overtime and if a team is ahead after that, they win. If the game is still tied after both have had one possession, then the next team that scores wins. A regular season game can end in a tie.

Wagering

With so many scoring opportunities and such a small playing field, it’s obvious that one of the hallmarks of AFL football is high scores. Scores such as 62-63 are not unusual in the arena league. Depending on the weekly match-ups, over/unders can easily top 100 points, whereas NFL over/unders tend to range between 33 and 46 points. Overall point spreads are the same as typical NFL differentiations, ranging from +/- 3 to the rare 10 ½ or 14 ½ variance. However, the spreads are determined differently.

Scores in the games tend to be relatively close, although there are your 65-25 blowouts. One of the great things about arena ball for bettors is the league is much more open about team information, willingly reporting injuries to odds makers. Why is this the case? The AFL knows that one of the things that has made the NFL so popular is betting, and they’d like some of the recognition and mass appeal that comes with Vegas and sportsbook “action.”

This is a less defensive minded league, which makes handicapping an AFL game different from analyzing an NFL contest. Remember, there’s much less specialization in arena ball, which means players must have skills on both sides of the ball. This also magnifies the importance of an injury, which can have a bigger affect in the AFL than it does in the NFL. Squads are also smaller in the 50-yard league, with 20 men per team and four reserves. Again, that translates into each player carrying more weight in the game.

The typical home field advantage in the NFL results in a 3- point spread, whereas that advantage in the AFL is 5-points. Two things influence the higher spread – the high scoring and the intensity of AFL fans. In arena football, spectators are extremely close to the game, making the experience more like a NBA game than a NFL contest. The physical closeness of fans to tough, unrelenting play can exacerbate emotions. Arena football venues rock! Thus, the home field advantage has more power over the outcome of the game.

When wagering, you should carefully consider the kicking game. Remember, it’s a fifty-yard field, which means an accurate kicker with a good leg can score from anywhere. Additionally, there are no weather conditions to influence kickers or any other players. Finally, there’s a lot more passing in the AFL and when researching QB, offensive and defensive ratings you want to keep this in mind. Player power ratings are also determined differently because players perform on both sides of the ball.

Arena football, with its emphasis on offensive action, creating more scoring opportunities, and desire to have more continuous play than the NFL, offers fans and bettors a venue unlike any other. Rambunctious, fast-paced, and frenetic, arena football has created its own niche in the world of professional sports. Fans love it – take a look if you haven’t already. If you love the sport of football, you’ll probably get hooked.

You’re thinking a “hedge” is something like a Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme, or maybe a small, furry member of the rodent family, or perhaps a row of bushes in England. Aren’t you? I don’t think so.

A hedge bet in football betting (or other sports wagering, for that matter) refers to betting on both teams in the same game in certain situations that will enable you to risk a small amount of money in the hope of winning 10 times or 20 times your original wager. “Sounds crazy,” you say? You will find only several opportunities throughout a betting season, but you must be aware of the fundamental concept to seize them when they occur.  This article will teach you how to identify these opportunities.

Let’s say for example that the San Francisco 49ers are scheduled to play the New York Giants next Sunday afternoon.  When the spread opens, let’s say the oddsmakers post the opening line for the game, favoring the Giants by 6 points. That is, if you bet on the Giants, you have to give the 49ers 6 points, and if you bet on the 49ers you get 6 points.  But as time goes by, the Giants become over-bet in New York, just as the 49ers are over-bet in San Francisco.  What local wagering services (bookies) do to balance their books is adjust their point spreads to attract additional bettors. As you know, the ideal situation for a bookie is to have equal amounts bet in both directions.  In that way they bear no risk, and are guaranteed to win.

For example, New York bookies may change the spread to -7 to attract 49er bettors, while San Francisco bookies may lower the spread to +5 to attract Giant money.

Here comes the Hedge — When this happens, there may be an opportunity to bet on the NY Giants at -5, and at the same time bet on the 49ers at +7, and hope that the final point difference falls within 4½ and 7½.   If it does, you’re a big winner!  What did he say?

Let’s look at some real numbers in the table below to understand the situation more clearly.  Here are the potential outcomes of $110 bet on the Giants at -5 and on the 49ers at +7, for all possible point differences:

In the second column, “$110 Bet on Giants at -5,” you lose if the Giants fail to cover, Push at 5 points, and win $100 at 6 points or greater.  The third column, “$110 Bet on 49ers at +7,” you win $100 at a 6 point or less difference, Push at 7 points, and lose $110 when the point difference is greater than 7.

From looking at the right most column labeled “Total Win (Loss),” you can see the financial results of all combinations of point differences between the Giants and 49ers.  The Conclusion: The most you can lose is $10, but you can win $100 or $200.

When should you hedge?

1) when the opening point spread is less than 15 points and the difference between the spreads listed by two bookies is 2½ points (i.e., 14 & 11 ½), or

2) when the difference between the spreads listed by two bookies is 2 points and the number 3 or 7 is included within the difference (i.e., 2½ & 4½ or 6 & 8), respectively.

Also, #1 above can be done with a 2 point differential instead of 2½, just as #2 above can be done with a 1½ point differential instead of 2, but then you will be cutting down your actual advantage.

With online gambling these days, you’re less likely to find betting line differences by region, but you certainly will find them as weather changes, players get injured or suspended, or the outcome of a game no longer means anything, as what happens at the end of the season.

When you win both sides of a Hedge bet, you’ll feel so smart, you might burst?  Visit http://www.NFLFootballIntelligence.com for other insightful articles on beating the spread.

The 2009 NFL betting regular season is here…finally. Thursday night it all starts with two of the AFC’s top teams. Both the Tennessee Titans and the Pittsburgh Steelers are amongst the favorites when looking at the NFL betting odds for “Who will win the AFC” NFL future bets.

The Steelers are a 6-point home favorite in the Thursday night opener and early NFL betting action, according to online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com, is favoring the host squad. So far, bettors are giving Pittsburgh 67% of all the action bet on this tilt.

I haven’t made my mind up yet which way I’m going to go, but I do know I don’t feel that comfortable laying 6 points and taking the Steelers. I think the Titans, even without Albert Haynesworth, are going to be tough to handle. So I guess I’m starting to lean to the underdog, but again, I still have to dig deeper.

July 28, 2006 (Cleveland, Ohio) – This city was once dubbed “the mistake by the lake” and they have done a heck of a job trying to change the impression that visitors like myself get when we visit this blue collar city. The Cleveland Indians have played some inspired baseball the past few years. King James rules the throne in basketball with the Cavaliers and the Cleveland Browns, with their rich traditions, have made some great moves during the offseason.

I was looking forward to seeing the new additions to coach Romeo Cremmel’s stable yesterday as this is year two in his regime and optimism reigns supreme at the training headquarters in Berea, Ohio. That was until Thursday morning when the Brownies were conducting their first 11-on-11 drills and their most prized acquisition, All-Pro Center LeCharles Bentley, went down on an innocent running play. Whether it be NFL or College Football, the number one criteria for a winning team is a strong and healthy offensive line. The center is arguably next to a talented quarterback, the most important component in this unit.

He calls all the blocking assignments and every play begins with him huddling up the team and then commencing it with the snap of the ball. A Cleveland native, Bentley spent his first four years with the New Orleans Saints. He started at right guard in his first two seasons and was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2003. The following year, Bentley moved to center and earned his second Pro Bowl selection in 2005.

The Browns forked over $36 million in the offseason to sign him to a 6-year deal and now he will miss the entire year with a torn patella tendon. Bentley’s injury is the latest for a Browns team beset by serious medical setbacks — No. 1 overall picks Courtney Brown and quarterback Tim Couch had several major injuries — since the club returned to the league as an expansion team in 1999.

On Thursday, tight end Kellen Winslow had his first contact after missing the past two seasons with major leg injuries. The Browns also are without wide receiver Braylon Edwards, their first-round pick in 2005, who is expected to be out until Oct. 1 following knee surgery.

While I realize that injuries are a big part of the world of football and playoff bound teams must overcome adversity, the Browns are done in 2006. With a young second year quarterback in Charlie Frye still learning on the job, this is one security blanket he desperately needed.

The good news for Ohio fans is that they still have the Ohio State Buckeyes to cheer for!

Chris Grisham asked:

College football betting line is now becoming more and more famous. Football is one of the most loved sports of Americans. Sure, it may seem like they hurt themselves and each other when they tackle but isn’t it the main charm of the game? Football, as tough of a sport as it is, continues to be one of the most fascinating sports in the world today. That is why even in non-professional football, people are starting to bet. The more popular ones are the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Football League (NFL) football leagues.

Some people have started to do this as a hobby but as the stakes get higher and the more they have experience, they get bigger amount of winnings and have already made quite a stable income out of it. There are some people who used to be just couch potatoes, who are unemployed and just bumming around at home who now has started their own business, bought their own car and houses. Is this sounding more and more interesting to you?

Basically, a college football betting line is a betting process wherein bettors or handicappers place the odds on specific teams in football. This is said to make the betting more fun because it makes the results unpredictable.

One of the successful individuals who have been betting in college football said that he used to go with his guts and his feelings since he really did not understand how it works. He started to lose at first and he was ready to just move on with his life but then he came across someone who knows the betting process more than he does. He found the reason why he kept on losing and this was because he was uninformed.

The most basic thing to keep in mind before betting on anything is having the right information. Betting is not merely luck. Of course, being lucky can also help but most of the time, being informed about your subject will increase more opportunities of you winning. In college football, to be able to increase your odds in winning, learn about the players. Know the players and their statistics. Know the teams and their chances of winning and losing. If you have the right information, it will be easier for you to know where to place your bet and increase your chances of earnings.

College football betting line is a great place to start if you are really not ready to bet for the professional football games. Just remember to keep yourself educated with the teams, their players and each one’s statistics and you will be good to go. Like in anything in life, being prepared for something is much safer than going with your emotions or your instincts. Betting is fun and could be a great source of income but is you lose tons of money because of it, it will never be fun. It will just be a vice that will drown you into a pit hole where you can never get yourself out.

Jake Truman asked:

If you bet on sports, there’s a good chance that you bet on football. Football betting accounts for about 40% (estimated) of all sports betting annually. A good portion of that goes into the NFL. Every season people rush to their favorite sports book off or online to make a wager. One of the most common wagers in NFL football is the parlay bet. People love winning big and the parlays give you the opportunity to win many times your original wager. However, many NFL football bettors walk away with losing tickets.

Can you make money betting on the NFL? Any professional sports bettor will sound off with a resounding yes answer. It’s been widely estimated and quoted that only 1% of sports bettors win on a consistent basis. If this is accurate, why is it so? One reason could be a lack of understanding of the game of NFL football. Another reason could be the lack of understanding of what a line really is.

If you are finding yourself constantly picking the losing team or just coming up short for a nice parlay win, give point totals a try. Many feel that betting on totals is a much easier game than picking sides. When you bet a totals line, you are betting on the total number of points scored between both teams during the game (regular time and over time). For instance, if the line was 38.5, you could wager on the under or over. Bet on the over and you want both teams to score 39 points or more—so you win. Bet on the under and you want both teams to score 38 points or less.

There are sports bettors out there who make a living off of totals lines. Some feel that there is less handicapping time involved as well. This means you can handicap more game, look for sweet lines and spend your time doing other things. It’s also possible to bet totals lines for just the quarters or the halves. For example, if a totals line is 40, the under/over for the first half might be 20. Furthermore, the line for the first quarter might be 8 or so. Typically the second and fourth quarter lines are larger than the first and third quarter lines.

The next time you sit down to make a wager on NFL football, give some thought to the totals line. It just might swing you into the winning column. If you are already a winning NFL sports bettor who’s not playing totals much, check them out. You should be able to add to your profits. There’s a reason why football betting is so big. It’s fun and profitable.

Gambling is great fun.  It doesn’t matter if our “action” is on the floor of a casino or in the chaos of your den on Football Sunday or on a frosty Monday night.  And when we win, it almost heals the pain of a loss.

If you’re accustomed to wagering on football games, or other sporting events, I’m sure you find that when you don’t have a bet on a game, you might not care as much about the outcome, unless of course it’s your home team or your childhood favorite.

But when you do bet, you’d like to know that you have a fighting chance of winning. That is, you’d never bet if the odds were overly stacked against you.  Would you bet $110 against the spread if you expected to win $65 instead of $100?  No chance! Yet, gamblers play parlay cards and try to beat odds that are beyond ridiculous.  I’ve tried to find worse bets.  I just can’t.  Consider the following table of Parlay Card scenarios with corresponding wins and losses.

Parlay         Real         Odds Bookies  Odds Bookies  Amount You Lose

Card      Probability     Should Pay       Actually Pay          Per Dollar

  2 Team    .25000                        3                  2.6                       .100

  3 Team    .12500                        7                     6                       .125

  4 Team    .06250                      15                   10                       .313

  5 Team    .03125                      31                   20                       .344

  6 Team    .01563                      63                   40                       .359

  7 Team    .00781                    127                   75                       .406

  8 Team    .00391                    255                 100                       .605

  9 Team    .00195                    511                 150                       .705

10 Team    .00098                  1023                 300                       .706

11 Team    .00049                  2047                 450                       .780

12 Team    .00024                  4095                 600                       .853

13 Team    .00012                  8191                 750                       .908

14 Team    .00006                16383                 900                       .945

15 Team    .00003                32767               1500                       .954

In the column labeled “Parlay Card,” the first entry is for “2 Teams.”  To win you must select two games and win them both.  One of two wins is a loss.  If the probability of winning a game is .5, then the probability of winning two games is .25 (.5 X .5).  That means on average you should win a 2 Team Parlay Card once every four times you play.  That means if you wager $1.00, you should get back $4.00 when you win, that is $3.00 plus your original bet of $1.00. The fair odds according to the table are 3 to 1, but as you can see, the odds you actually get are 2.6 to 1.  You only get back $3.60 instead of $4.00.  Basically, you lose 10% of your wager.

It gets worse! It’s not my opinion, it’s a fact that the probability of picking, for example, 5 winners on a 5-team parlay card is 1 in 32, or .03125.  That is, you can expect to hit 5 of 5, 1 time every 32 Parlay Cards you play.

If you had no “vig” or “juice” to pay, that is you were making a “fair” wager, the 1 time in 32 when you win, you should receive $32 ($31.00 plus your bet of $1.00).  But those wayward sports-book proprietors and your local bar-bookie pay you only $21, more than 35% less than they should.  The biggest joke is when you hit 15 out of 15, which has a probability of 1 in 32,768, and you win a pultry $1,500 – less than 5 cents on a dollar! Give me a break. Bookies deserve a piece of the action – they have expenses, some have legal risks, while others don’t balance their books adequately and essentially book the bets themselves.

You know, state lotteries return 60 cents on a dollar by statute! Don’t be a sucker.  If you play Parlay Cards, limit yourself to a 2 Team parlay.  Anything beyond this should be for tourists or people who just don’t care about gambling intelligently.

Monny Sklov asked:

No, I’m not talking about the clustering of three celebrities who seem to pass away at a time.  I’m referring to an extremely important concept that ultimately will help you make more intelligent wagers against the betting line in professional football.  In fact, if you consider this concept along with your regular weekly picks, you’ll find that by season’s end you will have beaten the spread several additional times.  Compelling, don’t you think?

Refer to the 3-column table below that lists Point Difference, Frequency and Percent for 2,386 NFL Football games from the year 2000 through 2008.  Point Difference refers to the loser’s score subtracted from the winner’s score. Frequency is the number of times a Point Difference has occurred over the same time period.  Percent is merely the Frequency for a particular Point Difference divided by the total number of games, 2,386. The list is ordered from highest to lowest Percent.

For example, within the 6th row under the heading, “Point Difference” you will see the number “14.”  Within the same row, in the column labeled “Frequency,” there is the number “110,” which refers to the number of times over the last 9 seasons that this Point Difference occurred.  The last column in the same row refers to the percent of the time this has occurred, or, 4.6% of the time.

Notice that the most common Point Difference between a winning and losing team is 3 points. In fact, this occurs a whopping 16% of the time!  That’s nearly 1 in 6 games, or on average, twice each week that this will happen.  Why is that important?  It means that you need to shop exhaustively for point spreads to make sure you find a spread that is the most to your advantage.  You must make sure that you never give 3½ points, but always try to get it.  Similarly, you must always try to give 2½ points! Half-point losses occur around the number “3” more than you remember.

And don’t forget the Point Difference of 7 points, which occurs just under 10% of the time. That’s right – beg, borrow, steal and surf the net to get 7½ points, and give 6½ points.  Avoid giving 7½ points like the plague!

As you can see from the table, the half-point differential applies to other Point Differences too, but it’s not too often that you’ll see a spread of 9½ or 10½.  However, consider it when available. Every percentage point helps!

The best way to exploit this advantage is to do your homework as far as finding the right betting service to use.  Betting lines will differ by region, by day of week, by time of day, and by bookie.

I Repeat:  Avoid giving 3½ and 7½ points, though take it whenever you can.  Similarly, try to give 2½ and 6½ points when available. Visit NFLFootballIntelligence.com for other related articles.

Jockson asked:

Yeah, he’s in the twilight of his career and yes, the never-ending circus around “will he or won’t he play” the last few years is tiresome, but Brett Favre just made the Minnesota Vikings a much better football team.

Despite the age and questions about his health, he is a proven QB and if his arm is healthy since off-season surgery, an real improvement over Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson.

NFL football betting in sports betting community took note once the news of his signing was announced, as money flowed in on the “Over 9.5” for the Vikings “Season Win Total” at online sportsbook.

SPORTSBETTING.com also reported a jump in action on Minnesota to win the NFC North. As it stands, Minnesota is listed at +130 to win their division, the NFC North; they are also listed at +500 to win the NFC championship and +1300 to win this year’s Super Bowl.

With Favre lining up behind center last season, the New York Jets went 9-7 straight up and 7-9 against the spread.

Meanwhile, the Vikings went 10-6 straight up and 6-10 ATS in 2008.

ESPN’s Cris Carter is reporting that Favre will start at QB this Friday when the Vikes host the Kansas City Chiefs in preseason action; Minnesota is a 3.5-point favorite.

Fast-forwarding to Week 1 of the regular season, the Minnesota Vikings will open with a road game against the Cleveland Browns, listed as 3-point favorites with the Total set at 39.5. Money also showed up on the Vikings side in this matchup, pushing the breakdown to 63% of all the action on the visitor.

In the last 20 games when listed as a fave of 4-points or less, the Vikings are quite profitable at 12-8 ATS. They do have a significant “Under” trend going in this situation, as they have posted 2 overs and 9 unders the last 11.

The game that everyone is now eyeing takes place on November 1 when the Vikes will play at Lambeau Field. Big divisional matchup and Favre hitting the field wearing a Viking jersey.

SPORTSBETTING.com lets you bet on this game right now with their “Games of the Year” prop offering. The Green Bay Packers are 2.5-point favorites in Game of the Year betting.

In Minnesota’s last 10 visits to Lambeau they are 7-3 ATS at the same time.

Should Favre return to form and lead the Minnesota Vikings to a successful season, he could be a candidate for NFL MVP and he is listed at +1800 to take this year’s award.

Like a cat, Brett Favre seems to have nine lives in the NFL football betting league, with his latest stint taking him back to the NFC North.

Is he past his prime or will he rekindle the magic?

We’ll see.
